Three Wheeled Buggies
Three-wheeled buggies are great for strolling around the neighborhood or running. Their compact design makes them easy to manoeuvre, even in tight spaces.
For an easy ride, opt for a pram fitted with air-filled tyres. Look for models with an swivel wheel that rotates 360 degrees in front. However, they are prone to punctures, so make sure you are prepared with an repair kit.
Sturdy frame
New data show that three-wheeled buggies, the emblem of the noughties, which were more expensive than common sense, are in a steep decline. Four-wheelers are replacing them, and are more versatile and easier to drive, while also looking elegant.
The basic idea is that the bigger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with bumpy ground and rough pavements. The larger wheels both rear and front enable you to maneuver and more stable while walking downhill or over difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn and a 3 year old and found it was able to withstand grass, cobbles rough pavements, dirt tracks and kerbs. She noted that it was sturdy to push, and very solid on difficult terrain. The tyres, which are inflated and require to be pumped regularly and have a suspension built-in. This was very comfortable for my children.
Another thing to consider is the seat size and shape. You will want it to be big enough for your child's comfort. You will also want it to be able to recline for them to lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat that lets your child face you, while other buggies only permit a parent-facing option.
The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road or walking in muddy areas. It can be used as a one-person unit from the beginning and can be modified to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for babies and toddlers from age four and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness and a spacious cushioned seat. The storage options are excellent as well, with a large basket, zip pockets inside the hood and an easy-to-access pouch on the rear of the seat unit.
Larger wheels
Larger wheels mean that your buggy will be more stable on uneven terrain, which is ideal for off-road buggies. In addition, they help you maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. A lot of three-wheeled buggies come with rotating front wheels that assist you in maneuvering around corners with ease, whereas others are designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability with the speed at which they can be pushed. This can also help in the event that you hit the roots of a tree or stray curb, since the front wheel can be lifted up to keep you from hitting it.
Many 3 wheel pushchairs feature air-filled tyres. This means they can handle a variety of terrains and are far more flexible than 4-wheeler. They're also lighter. However, they're susceptible to punctures, so you'll need to keep a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump in your bag.
Our top three-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both of these buggies come with larger wheels that, according to MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on gravel tracks, grass and market town cobbles" and are able to easily go up and down kerbs. 3 wheeled pushchair come with a suspension system that in her words "smoothes out bumps very effectively".
Buggies with bigger wheels can be quite wide, and can be difficult to fit into narrow spaces. This is an issue if you plan to use it for jogging or have to squeeze through narrow doorways while out and about. Fortunately, many models come with small folding options that let you take off the front wheels for more compact storage.
Easy to maneuver
A three-wheeler can be more maneuverable for a child. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels can turn on a dime, and are easy to move, making them ideal for challenging terrain such as parks, cobblestones, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the 3-wheeler with her toddler, and she said: "The Terrain is a joy to maneuver on uneven terrain. The front swivel wheel was particularly helpful." I was also impressed with how well it handled kerbs when using the hand-operated break. It was very stable for descending or on uneven terrain."
The only downside to this amazing maneuverability is that the larger wheels of a 3-wheel buggy may make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something you should keep in mind when your home is one of the cities. If this is an issue then a 4-wheeler might be a better choice for you.
